Just Strays, Inc. is a volunteer
non-profit cat rescue organization
We are dedicated to helping stray cats and kittens in southern Westchester County, New York. We have been rescuing cats since 1981. All animals taken in are checked for good health, spayed/neutered, inoculated, and FELV/FIV tested. All donations directly benefit the animals.
As you may know, Nikki Manookian, our President, retired after 28 years of dedicated service. With Nikki's retirement, the cat shelter was closed down.
We now place all our resources and efforts in a
Trap, Neuter, Return, Sustain Program (TNR). We need the public's assistance in trapping, transporting, and holding for recovery. The TNR program consists of the following:
- Trap the feral cats.
- Transport them to the veterinarian where the cats are tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, spayed or neutered, receive their rabies vaccination and have their right ear clipped for future identification. Pick the cats up from the vet at the end of the day and aftercare them until they are ready to be returned to their original site. Male cats require two days of aftercare while females require five days as their surgery is more invasive.
- To educate the public to the importance of spaying/neutering stray and companion animals.
- To work with and promote cooperation among other responsible humane animal groups.
People who are willing to assist in trapping and fostering can leave a message with the Just Strays Call Center at 914-330-4513.
Benefits of spaying and neutering cats!
Think of all the unwanted kittens that would have been born if these cats were not spayed and neutered; kittens that likely would not have found homes. With devoted feeders, the general health of these altered cats greatly improves and they can go on to live for many years.
When trapping feral cats, we come across very friendly cats that cannot be put back on the street. Volunteers trapping the cats do their best to foster these cats until a home can be found. Many of these cats are clearly abandoned and not street smart. In reality, all the cats that would have gone to the Just Strays shelter and would have been placed for adoption are now being fostered in the homes of volunteers who trap them. We are in desperate need of foster homes and any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
